In this article we will review The Abolition of Man by Clive Lewis.
Book Plot
“The Abolition of Man” is a non-fiction book by C.S. Lewis that explores the nature of objective value and the consequences of its loss in society. Lewis argues that modern education has rejected the concept of objective value, which is the belief that certain attitudes are really true and others really false to the kind of thing the universe is and the kind of things we are. He believes that this rejection has led to the creation of “Men Without Chests,” people who lack the ability to recognize objective value and are therefore unable to make moral judgments. Lewis argues that this loss of objective value is a threat to human dignity and freedom, and that it must be resisted if we are to preserve our humanity.

The Abolition of Man Review
This book improves with each reading, as I initially struggled to understand much of it, aside from the famous paragraph at the end of the first chapter. Upon my fourth or fifth reading, I approached it with a new perspective for my book club, making notes and underlining passages. This fresh approach allowed me to grasp more of the content, although I still found some parts challenging. I now consider the key message of the book to be Lewis’s discussion of ‘debunking’, which I believe is a common flaw among Christians that undermines our message. It is essential for us to reflect on this and avoid falling into the trap of debunking, as highlighted in the book.
