In this article we will review Silas Marner by George Eliot.
Book Plot
An outwardly simple tale of a linen weaver, it is notable for its strong realism and its sophisticated treatment of a variety of issues ranging from religion to industrialisation to community.
Silas Marner is a skilled weaver who lives in the village of Raveloe in early nineteenth-century England. He is an outsider, viewed with suspicion due to his special skills and his mysterious cataleptic fits. He was once part of a religious sect in Lantern Yard, but he was falsely accused of theft and excommunicated.

Silas Marner Review
During my teenage years, I had heard negative things about Silas Marner, being described as a terrible book about a greedy old man that I had no interest in reading. However, thanks to modern adaptations by Steve Martin, such as ‘Roxane’ and ‘Silas Marner’ in the movie “A Simple Little Wish”, which stayed true to the original stories, I was inspired to finally pick up the book. It took some time for me to adjust to the 16th-century English language used by George Eliot (who was actually a woman), but once I did, I found the book to be a wonderful and uplifting read. Although challenging to start, the book proved to be extremely rewarding in the end.
