In this article we will review Martin Chuzzlewit by Charles Dickens.
Book Plot
Set partly in America, which Dickens had visited in 1842, the novel includes a searing satire on the United States. Martin Chuzzlewit is the story of two Chuzzlewits, Martin and Jonas, who have inherited the characteristic Chuzzlewit selfishness. It contrasts their diverse fates of moral redemption and worldly success for one, with increasingly desperate crime for the other. This powerful black comedy involves hypocrisy, greed and blackmail, as well as the most famous of Dickens’s grotesques, Mrs Gamp.

Martin Chuzzlewit Review
The book portrays a world filled with selfish individuals, leading to a society driven by greed in the author’s view. The protagonist, Martin Chuzzlewit, faces issues with his kind-hearted grandfather who he now despises for unknown reasons. In a bid to seek his fortune, Martin decides to leave England for America with his friend Mark Tapley. The journey is arduous, with the two facing sickness and discomfort. Upon arriving in New York, Martin is unimpressed by the behavior of Americans, noting their obsession with money and lack of manners. Despite the challenges, Martin continues his adventures, encountering various unsavory characters and shady practices. The novel may not be considered Dickens’ best work, but it still manages to captivate readers, especially his loyal fans who appreciate his storytelling style. It is a lengthy piece of literature that may not be suitable for those unfamiliar with Dickens’ writing.
