In this article we will review Free Fall by William Golding.
Book Plot
Sammy Mountjoy, artist, rises from poverty and an obscure birth to see his pictures hung in the Tate Gallery. Swept into World War II, he is taken as a prisoner-of-war, threatened with torture, then locked in a cell of total darkness to wait. He emerges from his cell like Lazarus from the tomb, seeing infinity in a grain of sand and eternity in an hour. Transfigured by his ordeal, he begins to realize what man can be and what he has gradually made of himself through his own choices. He determines to find the exact point at which the accumulated weight of those choices has deprived him of free will.

Free Fall Review
I completed reading this book three weeks back without taking any notes due to personal challenges at the time. All I can recall is that it deeply moved me and resonated with me. It was the author’s most easily understandable book to date.
The story follows a man who faced poverty, orphanhood, and various challenges, reflecting on his life to find when he lost his freedom and power of choice. Despite surviving many difficult situations and achieving security in adulthood, he had lost his personal freedom.
This theme of losing personal freedom seems to be a common concern in 1950s literature, which I have noticed during my reading project.
