Emma Review
Oh my goodness, I absolutely adored this book. Towards the end, when Austen’s intended climax occurred, I was so engrossed that I literally fell off the couch onto the rug. The protagonist, Emma, is a unique character – headstrong, misguided, and self-confident – yet she is lovable because of her honesty. The romantic entanglements are endless, the humor is top-notch, and the writing is exceptional. Unlike Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, where the plot is meticulously crafted, in this novel her sentences shine on their own. I found it fascinating to read this alongside Dostoyevsky’s THE IDIOT, as they share similarities in truth and insight, providing additional pleasures. Austen is often underrated due to her focus on plot rather than language, but her prose is both engaging and deserving of careful consideration.
