In this article we will review Eyeless in Gaza by Aldous Huxley.
Book Plot
Written at the height of his powers immediately after Brave New World, Aldous Huxley’s highly acclaimed Eyeless in Gaza is his most personal novel. Huxley’s bold, nontraditional narrative tells the loosely autobiographical story of Anthony Beavis, a cynical libertine Oxford graduate who comes of age in the vacuum left by World War I. Unfulfilled by his life, loves, and adventures, Anthony is persuaded by a charismatic friend to become a Marxist and take up arms with Mexican revolutionaries. But when their disastrous embrace of violence nearly kills them, Anthony is left shattered—and is forced to find an alternative to the moral disillusionment of the modern world.

Eyeless in Gaza Review
The main difference between literature and real life is the ratio of extraordinary individuals to ordinary people. Books often feature a high number of exceptional characters, while in actuality, they are quite rare. I was confined to bed, unable to sleep, but managed to finish reading a complex novel in just 24 hours. Overflowing with thought-provoking ideas, the novel Eyeless explores the concept of Action and the character Anthony’s lifelong obsession with freedom. The narrative shifts between multiple timelines, reminiscent of a game of Texas Hold’em played by the deity Moloch. Various characters in the novel are either debauched or staunch believers in different ideologies. Huxley suggests that simplicity may be the key amidst the chaos of politics and history. Although gardens are not explicitly mentioned, their presence is implied. Written in 1936 during a time of turmoil in Spain and the world, the novel reflects a sense of urgency. It makes me wonder if our current anxieties will be captured in a similarly masterful way in the future.
