Book Plot
“Jude the Obscure” by Thomas Hardy is a poignant novel set in Wessex, England during the Victorian era. The story revolves around Jude Fawley, a poor orphan with dreams of studying at the university in Christminster. Inspired by his old teacher, Richard Phillotson, who left with similar ambitions, Jude begins teaching himself classical languages and learning stonemasonry. However, he is distracted by Arabella Donn, a vain and sensual young woman. Arabella tricks Jude into marriage, but their union quickly falls apart. Jude eventually makes his way to Christminster, where he meets his intelligent cousin, Sue Bridehead. Jude falls deeply in love with Sue, but their relationship is complicated. They live platonically, and Sue’s feelings remain unclear.
The novel explores themes of love, social class, and societal expectations, all against the backdrop of English social and religious conventions of the time.

Jude the Obscure Review
My son describes me as being heartbroken by Hardy once again. I wonder why nobody warned me about the emotional turmoil that comes with reading Jude after my experience with Tess. Perhaps I received advice but chose to ignore it, just like Sue and Jude, leading me to be left feeling broken by the end. I am unable to forgive Phillotson for his actions, Arabella is too ignorant to understand her own wrongdoings, and Sue, although misguided, is like a beautiful bird trapped in a cage. As for Jude, his love and loss are honorable, and his honesty is a remarkable trait.
