Adam Bede Review
I think this book is incredibly beautiful, it left me feeling both uplifted and emotionally drained. George Eliot’s writing is a mix of tragedy and great beauty. Even though I read an older edition, the introduction quoted Charles Dickens and Alexandre Dumas praising Adam Bede as a masterpiece. While many consider Middlemarch as Eliot’s best work, I personally found myself more drawn to the characters in Adam Bede. I appreciated how Eliot portrayed her characters with humanity, unlike Dickens, who often depicted them as either good or evil. I could relate to Arthur Donnithorne’s struggle to be a good person despite his weaknesses. The book’s portrayal of religion in 1799 resonates with the religious fervor of the time it was published in 1856. Characters like Mr. Irwine and Dinah reflect the search for spiritual truth amidst dissatisfaction with the established religion. Mrs. Poyser’s character stood out for her strength and resilience against oppressive figures like the Squire and Mr. Massey. The epilogue provided closure for the characters, making this a must-read book.
