Daniel Deronda Review
This was a lengthy narrative that ultimately proved to be worth reading. While I had previously enjoyed George Eliot’s “Middlemarch”, I found “Daniel Deronda” to be a distinct and fascinating story. The protagonist, Gwendolen, is a complex character who exhibits traits of selfishness, attention-seeking behavior, and frivolity, reminiscent of Scarlett O’Hara from “Gone with the Wind”. Despite her flaws, I found her character development intriguing, though some readers may find her unlikable. In contrast to Gwendolen, the character of Daniel Deronda is portrayed as considerate, caring, and curious about Jewish culture, which sets him apart from the societal norms of the time. The novel delves into themes of life and morality, occasionally addressing the reader directly, which I found challenging at times. Overall, I believe this epic tale is well-crafted, engaging, and definitely worth reading. I am glad to have encountered Gwendolen, Daniel, and the other captivating characters within the story.
