In this article we will review Klara and the Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro.
Book Plot
“Klara and the Sun” by Kazuo Ishiguro is a novel told through the eyes of Klara, an android. Klara is an Artificial Friend (AF), a special type of solar-powered robot designed to assist in raising children. The story begins in a near-future United States city, where Klara observes life from a store window. She gazes at people outside in the Sun, dismayed when the Cootings Machine, a pollution-spewing construction vehicle, blocks the sunlight. Witnessing a man resurrected by the Sun convinces Klara that it has healing powers. Eventually, Klara is purchased by Josie and her mom. Josie, suffering from a chronic illness caused by a procedure called lifting, plans to create a near-exact AF replica of herself. Klara’s powers of observation become crucial as she tries to “continue” Josie’s existence.

Klara and the Sun Review
Ishiguro is extremely skilled at creating dystopian worlds that are both shocking and disorienting, yet somehow familiar because they are based on present values taken to the extreme. He is also adept at writing scenes where misunderstandings lead to conflict, making the reader feel the desire to intervene. Klara and the Sun explores the potential future of artificial intelligence and genetic engineering in a suspenseful novel that raises ethical questions without offering clear answers. This intentional ambiguity prompts readers to draw connections between our current society and the one presented in the book. While the first 100 pages may feel slow with a plot centered on AI, the narrative eventually unfolds in intricate and subtle ways if you stick with it.
