In this article we will review The Doors of Perception by Aldous Huxley.
Book Plot
“The Doors of Perception” is an autobiographical book by Aldous Huxley, published in 1954. In this work, Huxley recounts his psychedelic experience under the influence of mescaline in May 1953. The insights he gained during this trip ranged from the “purely aesthetic” to “sacramental vision”. The book reflects on the philosophical and psychological implications of altered perception. Huxley’s exploration of psychedelic drugs as facilitators of mystical insight sparked both fascination and controversy. While some found the argument compelling, others countered that the effects of mescaline are subjective and should not be conflated with objective religious mysticism.

The Doors of Perception Review
I want to read more of Huxley’s work, particularly “The Perennial Philosophy,” which I have tried to start several times but haven’t fully delved into yet. I plan to read it after finishing “A Brief History Of Everything,” as tackling both simultaneously would be overwhelming. One key takeaway from a recent book I read was the concept of our brain as a mechanism that filters out unnecessary information to focus on survival. This evolutionary trait has helped us become dominant in the food chain. However, in modern times, we have more freedom to explore beyond survival needs. Instead, many of us fill the void in our lives with material goods, seeking meaning and purpose. Perception and consciousness are crucial for a fulfilling life and shaping our collective future. I realized the significance of this message while waiting for a bus, pondering aging and the routine mechanics of life. It seems that as we age, we become more focused on mundane tasks like bills and appointments. But it doesn’t have to be this way; we have the power to create a more meaningful existence.
