In this article we will review That Hideous Strength by Clive Lewis.
Book Plot
“That Hideous Strength” is a science fiction novel by C.S. Lewis and is the third book in the “Space Trilogy”. It tells the story of Mark and Jane Studdock, a newly married couple, who are drawn into a sinister conspiracy by the National Institute for Co-ordinated Experiments (N.I.C.E.), an ostensibly scientific institute that is a front for supernatural forces. The novel explores themes of good and evil, the nature of humanity, and the relationship between God and the universe. The title of the novel is taken from a poem by David Lyndsay, which refers to the Tower of Babel.

That Hideous Strength Review
I have read “That Hideous Strength” multiple times and it has always been my favorite book of C.S. Lewis’ space trilogy. However, this time around, it intrigued me in a way it never had before. Only C.S. Lewis, with his intelligence, knowledge, writing skill, wit, and Christian perspective, could have created such a book. This novel is Lewis’ most satirical work, surpassing even “Screwtape Letters,” and is perhaps his most complex fiction piece besides “Till We Have Faces.” Despite being set in 1940s England, the themes in the book are still relevant in the United States today. The story serves as a fictional companion to Lewis’ “The Abolition of Man,” critiquing the British education system. Although it may seem like a dry subject for fiction, Lewis handles it adeptly. While it is helpful to have read the first two books of the trilogy before “That Hideous Strength,” the central characters here are a young married couple, Mark and Jane Studdock. The novel explores the battle between good and evil, with Mark being lured towards evil and Jane towards good without fully realizing it. The legend of King Arthur also plays a significant role in the book, which has a dark and sometimes gruesome subject matter. Comic relief is provided by Mr. Bultitude, a character I won’t spoil for you.
